27. Memoirs of a Geisha
I remember reading "Memoirs of a Geisha" in grade 9 and really enjoying it. Sometimes I like to re-read books to remember them again. This book is so beautiful. I absolutely love the details and the character development, especially seeing everything though Chiyo/Sayuri's blue-grey eyes.
If you want to learn about another culture completely, I highly recommend "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden. It's definitely one of my all-time favourite books.

26. Angels and Demons
Looks like I'm on a Dan Brown high! I bought this book for $4 at BMV (my favourite book store). It was such an amazing book! I know, I know, Dan Brown uses the same formula for all his books--but I still really enjoy them. His books are so suspenseful and interesting.

24. To Kill a Mockingbird
For the last 20 days, I switched from book-to-book-to-book! I started reading "The Mermaid Chair" by Sue Monk Kidd but switched to reading "Seeing" by José Saramago, the sequel to "Blindness". I read about 50-70 pages of each book but finally settled on "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. This is what happens when you put a gazllion books on hold at the library!
"To Kill a Mockingbird" was such an incredible book! I've been wanting to read this since forever! I didn't get to read it in high school like everybody else. I wish I got to study this book. It was such an engaging, heart-wrenching and haunting book. The characters were so endearing, especially the Finch's--Atticus, Jem and darling Scout. The case of Tom Robinson's was such a clear portrayal of the horrible injustice that existed. It was also great evidence of Atticus' unwavering honesty and loyalty.
If you didn't get a chance to read this book in high school, I highly recommend that you read it now!

23. Blindness
I have no words to describe this book. "Blindness" by José Saramago is the most incredible book. To even fathom such a world is terrifying beyond belief. The book was so horrifying but what was truly appalling was the underlying truth about human nature and animalistic instincts.
The ultimate act of selflessness is that of the Doctor's Wife when she decides to enter a blind world as the only seeing person. What's amazing is her continued altruism and compassion.
I don't want to reveal anymore, I just want everyone to read it!

22. The Flying Troutmans
I was going to read "Fall On Your Knees" but forgot it one day and needed a book to read on the bus. I enjoyed Miriam Toew's "A Complicated Kindness" so I thought I'd choose another one of her books. I really enjoyed "The Flying Troutmans". The characters were endearing! I could definitely identify with Thebes, the younger sister with purple hair and a vibrant personality who loved to create things to make others feel better. Who wouldn't want a giant, fake cheque for one million dollars?
The subject matter itself was dark but the author managed to make it humorous but very real and intense at the same time. You went on this long and amazing journey with this broken yet together family and as you delved into their memories and stories, all you hoped was for each of them to make it.

21. Golem in the Gears
Wow! Finally finished reading the first NINE books of the Xanth series. I think I'll stop for now (well, until I can get my hands on the next book which is not available in the library--gasp!) and move on to more, ahem... "adult" books. I thoroughly enjoyed the series and I love the author's style of writing, especially all his clever puns!! I can't wait to return to the magical and wonderful world of Xanth later.

5. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
I absolutely LOVED this book. I think I'm kind of obsessed now. I'm even thinking of doing a Wicked-inspired painting for my painting course. haha. And I just took out "Son of a Witch" the sequel to this book and I'm so excited to find out what happened to... well, I won't reveal anything. The book was so interesting! It was such a revealing book and showed such a different perspective to the Wizard of Oz story that we all know and love. Suddenly, the wicked witch isn't so wicked... I can't WAIT to see the musical when it comes to Toronto in June 2010!
I'm adding a few book recommendations to my "to read" list. I'm so excited to have new books in different genres. And I am finally going to tackle "Lord of the Rings". It's about time, huh.

4 1/2
I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying my current book "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West". I passed the halfway mark (there are 526 pages) a few days ago, and I'm slowly making my way through it. I've decided to read mostly on the bus/subway (or while waiting) so it's going to take me a lot longer to finish books. I may read a bit before I sleep but I tend to just stay up because I can't put the book down! And then it messes up my sleeping pattern.
Back to the book. I am REALLY enjoying it. We all know the story of Dorothy and her friends. We all know what happens to the Wicked Witch and who the Wizard of Oz really is. But only from Dorothy's perspective. So it's really interesting to see things from another perspective--from the "villain's" side.
I can't wait to finish this book!

4. The Tales of Beedle the Bard
Very cute book! I love fairy tales so I really enjoyed reading wizard fairy tales! My favourite story had to be either "The Wizard and the Hopping Pot" or "Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump"! I also thought having little footnotes by J.K. Rowling and including Dumbledore's thoughts on each tale was very clever. J.K. Rowling is truly The Master of her created universe!

It's 2009, bitches!! I definitely read 40+ books last year (omfg Twilight). So proud of myself!! Yay for reading!! :)
My goal for this year is 50 books and this time I will keep track! I probably won't write reviews, maybe some brief thoughts but I'll definitely keep a list.
